SXSW :: Day One

Friday is technically the first day of the conference, but things really get going on Saturday morning. Day one? Think long, slightly nerve-wracking day of travel complete with bad weather and flight delays. And then a surreal transition from tightly-packed plane to the massive Austin convention center. Standing next to one of MTV’s first VJs, Alan Hunter, while waiting to pick up our canvas bag o’ schwag may have added to this experience. Look for Saturday’s review online tomorrow.

SXSW Interactive in Less than a Minute

I always have to remind myself that “South By Southwest” means “millions of bands” to most people in Austin and around the world. “I’ll be there during Interactive week,” I explain. Blank stares. Last year’s Web Awards host, Ze Frank, breaks it down in under a minute:

IE8: Standards-Compliant By Default

With the beta version of Internet Explorer 8 scheduled for release in the “first half of 2008,” Microsoft announced Monday it has rethought the dominant browser, and plans to make the program more friendly to Web standards. The software maker said that a planned standards compatibility mode will now be the default rendering engine when IE 8 makes its debut, and that the new browser is capable of passing the Acid2 rendering test. Seems crazy, right? Imagine this: a video of IE’s GM Dean Hachamovitch and Architect Chris Wilson, as the two discuss the importance of standards, compatibility and interoperability with the upcoming browser.
